Q What surfaces can a glass splashback be fixed to? A Most clean, dry surfaces including GIB, tiles and even wallpaper.
Q Will my colour-coated splashback be see-through? A You will not be able to see through it when it is affixed to the wall.
Q Can I match the colour to my paint chart? A Some suppliers have a colour-matching service. Bear in mind that clear glass has a green tinge to it that can affect the colour. For colour-matching, most people recommend the use of low iron glass, which gives a more faithful rendition of your colour.
Q Does my splashback have to be in toughened safety glass? A Amendment No.2 of NZS5261:2003 states that any glass within 200 mm of a gas hob must be toughened glass with a minimum thickness of 5 mm. We recommend that only toughened safety glass is used, for strength, safety and longevity.
Q How is a glass splashback fixed to the wall? A Most commonly with silicone adhesive. It is important to use NEUTRAL CURE silicone though as acid cure or alkali cure could damage the colour-coating.
Q How is the colour applied to glass splashbacks? A It is sprayed onto the rear of the glass. The more reputable manufacturers use a chemical bonding agent to increase adhesion. The less reputable don’t bother with this.
Q Are glass splashbacks easy to install? A Most people would find it easy to install one of the standard size splashbacks using the supplied instructions and adhesive. However, larger pieces might be a 2-person job.
Q Can I have holes cut out for power points? A Yes you can but be aware that they will require very careful measurement to ensure that they are in exactly the right place.
Q My glass splashback needs to be an awkward shape, can this be done? A Yes but the splace where the splashback is to be fitted will probably have to be templated. This is done by cutting out the shape in hardboard or a similar stiff material. Templating would normally be carried out by a skilled tradesperson though a competent handyperson might feel confident that they have the skills.
Q What tools do I need? A Usually just a tape measure and a silicone (caulking) gun.
Q Can I use coated glass in other areas of the home? A Yes you certainly can. They look great in any position that traditional wall tiles might have been used such as bathroom and laundry.
Q What warranty should a glass splashback have? A It should be guaranteed against delamination of the colour-coating for 10 years.
Q How much will my splashback cost? A Prices vary but do be suspicious if the price is very low. Ensure that the supplier is actually supplying toughened glass. Ordinary glass is cheaper but not so safe. Also, you will not be able to match the colour exactly if you have to replace a piece.
